You can not visit the Province of Trapani without a stop in Castelvetrano . It too involved in the '68 earthquake which hit the Belice Valley retains a charming old town with elegant palaces and beautiful churches full of treasures.

It was the family of Tagliavia to ottennere by the Normans in the title of barons 1299 and to have a primary role in the development of the city both economically and urban. But its importance is closely linked to the presence in its territory of the largest archaeological park of Europe 's: Selinunte. The city center develops into a system of three adjacent squares that communicating with one another form the backdrop to the most important monuments . We begin our walk from the small Piazza Umberto I, where there is the Fontana della Ninfa, a system of overlapping pools surmounted by a nymph in a niche of clear Baroque taste. The work was commissioned to Orazio Nigrone from Aragon Tagliavia Principles to inaugurate the restoration of the aqueduct in the city. In the same square stands the Campanile, built between '400 and' 500 on the left side of the Mother Church. In it are the architect Giovanni Gandolfo bells. Recently while working on the construction of a pedestrian, in the old town under the floor, It was found a necropolis to the Norman period. The Mother Church of the sixteenth century is dedicated to the Assumption, It has a stone facade of tuff Romanesque Revival style and a beautiful carved portal. At its interior is divided into three aisles with a wooden ceiling and a ridge beam depicted as originally. Interesting stucco decorations of Antonio Ferraro and Gaspare Serpotta the baptismal font with a magnificent carved wooden lid.

Pignatelli Palace is the former residence of Tagliavia Principles and Pignatelli Aragona Cortes. The Ducal Palace is located on the ruins of an ancient castle of the century. XIII, currently visible remains of the castle Frederick are, an angular tower and a median tower. Today a part of the building is the town hall, the first floor is a church, the Collegiate Church of St. Peter and some areas are private properties. Next to the eighteenth century Chiesa del Purgatorio is the Teatro Selinus.

Its neo-classical façade has a portico with Doric style columns and reminiscent of the nearby temples of Selinunte, The theater was designed by architect Giuseppe Palermo Patricolo and built in 1870 at the behest of the Saporito family. The site where today stands the theater was occupied by a small, modest hotel that, reminds, the plaque placed on the left of the main entrance, offered hospitality, the 21 April 1787, the famous German writer Wolfgang Goethe, who he recalled the fact in his famous "Italian Journey". Particularly interesting is the canvas of the curtain, painted by Gennaro Pardo Castelvetrano, depicting "Empedocles among selinuntini". The Garibaldi square is prolonged in the homonymous street, along which stands the elegant sixteenth-century palace, once held the Majo family, now a seat of the Civic Museum. And 'This is the home of the famous Ephebe of Selinunte , an elegant bronze statue, dating back to 460 a.C. and attributed by many scholars to Praxiteles. It was found in a park area now called "manuzza" (small hand) , as a small hand she is sticking out of the statue from the ground and to notice what was a young shepherd .The museum houses along with many artifacts from Selinunte also sacred objects and paintings .

The Garibaldi street ends with the civic port, of the 1626, called "Arc of the Ammaculata", but renamed Porta Garibaldi, on the occasion of the route traveled by the General and his Mille during the unification of the Kingdom. This is the only port still visible of the ancient wall.
Castelvetrano is now famous for its black bread made with wheat still brought here by the Greeks and baked in stone ovens.
